What causes adult acne?

It is not uncommon to experience acne symptoms for the first time as an adult or after being without symptoms for many years. There can be a number of reasons why someone may experience acne-like symptoms, but some of the more common causes are:

  • Hormonal changes- hormonal fluctuations can trigger acne symptoms, especially in biological females during menstruation, pregnancy or when taking hormonal birth control

  • Stress- high levels of stress can contribute to hormonal imblanaces  which can cause acne

  • Diet- Certain foods, such as dairy products and foods with high glycemic index, can trigger acne in some people

  • Genetics- a family history of acne can increase the likelihood of developing adult acne

  • Medications- Some medications, like corticosteroids, lithium and certain anticonvulsants, can cause acne as a side effect.

  • Skincare products- Using the wrong type of skincare products or not properly removing makeup can clog pores and contribute to acne

  • Environmental factors- Exposure to pollution and other environmental toxins can irritate the skin and contribute to acne

How can acne be treated?

Acne can be treated using various methods, depending on the severity and underlying cause. Some effective treatments include:

  • Prescription-strength topical treatments, including retinoids (Tretinoin) or antibiotics to unclog pores, reduce inflammation and kill acne-causing bavteria

  • Oral medications for more moderate to severe cases, including antibiotics to reduce bacteria or anti-androgen medications like Spironolactone or birth control pills to treat hormonal acne

  • Lifestyle changes to diet to improve gut inflammation which may contibute to acne symptoms

What is the best treatment for fine lines and wrinkles?

The best treatments for fine lines and wrinkles are:

  • Topical treatments, like prescription strength retinoids (ie., Tretinoin) which stimulates collagen production, increases cell turnover and smooths the skin's texture

  • Neurotoxin injections like Botox and Dysport are popular injectable treatments that can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles

  • Microneedling is an office procedure that stimulates collagen production, which results in a natural, smoother appearance of the skin and decreases fine lines and wrinkles

  • Lifestyle changes like protecting your skin from the sun, avoiding smoking, staying hydrated and eating a well balanced diet can all help prevent and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
