What are causes of low libido?

Low libido, or a decreased interest in sexual activity, can have various causes in women. Here are some common causes:

  • Hormonal changes: Changes in hormone levels, such as during menopause, pregnancy, or breastfeeding, can lead to a decrease in libido.

  • Medications: Certain medications, such as antidepressants, antihistamines, and blood pressure medications, can have side effects that reduce libido.

  • Stress and anxiety: High levels of stress and anxiety can affect sexual desire and make it difficult to engage in sexual activity.

  • Relationship issues: Problems in a relationship, such as conflict or lack of emotional intimacy, can affect sexual desire.

  • Depression: Depression is often associated with a decrease in sexual desire.

  • Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, and chronic pain, can affect sexual desire.

  • Fatigue and lack of sleep: Chronic fatigue and lack of sleep can lead to a decrease in libido.

  • Age: As women age, their sexual desire may decrease due to changes in hormone levels and physical changes in the body.

What can be done about low libido?

Here are some strategies that can help boost libido in women:

  • Hormonal therapy: If low libido is due to hormonal imbalances, such as low levels of testosterone or estrogen, hormonal therapy may be helpful. This can include testosterone replacement therapy or hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

  • Medical treatment: medications such as Addyi or Vyleesi may help increase libido.

  • Medication review: Certain medications, such as antidepressants, can have side effects that reduce libido.  Switching medications may help to mitigate this side effect.

  • Intimate PRP (including OShot) can increase libido, as well as arousal and orgasm for some.
  • Sexual stimulation: Engaging in sexual activity and exploring different types of sexual stimulation, such as masturbation or incorporating sex toys, can help increase sexual desire.

  • Psychological counseling: If low libido is due to stress, anxiety, or other psychological factors, counseling or therapy can be helpful in addressing these issues.

  • Lifestyle changes: Making lifestyle changes such as reducing stress, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly can help boost libido.

  • Communication: Open and honest communication with a partner about sexual desires and preferences can help increase sexual desire and create a more satisfying sexual relationship.
